How to Read a Drug Test Cup: Faint Lines, Positives and Invalid Results

Instant drug test cups are simple to read once you know one rule that surprises most people: on these tests, a line means negative. This guide walks through every result you can see, including the faint lines that cause the most confusion.

The quick answer

What you see Result
A line at C and a line at T (even a very faint one) Negative
A line at C only, no line at T Preliminary positive
No line at C Invalid. Retest with a new cup.

C is the control region and T is the test region. Each panel in the cup has its own C and T, so read every panel separately.

Why a line means negative

Instant tests are competitive immunoassays. If a substance is present above the cutoff level, it blocks the test line from forming. So when the T line appears, the substance was not detected above the cutoff. When the T line is missing, it was.

Is a faint line negative?

Yes. Any visible line in the T region, no matter how faint, is read as negative. The darkness of the line does not show how much of a substance is present, and a faint line does not mean "almost positive." If you are unsure whether you see a line, treat the result as unclear and confirm with a laboratory test.

Step by step

  1. Collect the sample and close the lid.
  2. Check the temperature strip within 4 minutes. A fresh sample should read between 90 and 100°F (32 to 38°C).
  3. Peel the label covering the result window, if your cup has one.
  4. Wait 5 minutes, then read each panel. Do not read results after 10 minutes, because lines can change as the test dries.
  5. Record the result for each panel, along with the date, time and the collector's name.

What causes an invalid result?

  • Not enough urine in the cup to reach the test strips
  • Reading the test too early
  • An expired or damaged cup (check the expiration date and keep cups sealed until use)
  • A cup stored in extreme heat or cold

An invalid result means the test did not work. It is not a positive or a negative. Retest with a new cup.

What to do after a preliminary positive

An instant test is a screen, not a final answer. Before making an employment, housing or treatment decision, send the sample to a laboratory for confirmation (such as GC/MS or LC-MS/MS). Some prescription medications can also cause a positive screen, so ask about current prescriptions.

Reading adulterant and temperature checks

Many of our cups include a temperature strip, and the 20 panel cup also checks pH, specific gravity and creatinine. Compare the adulterant pads to the color chart on the label. Read our guide to spotting diluted or fake urine samples.

Frequently asked questions

Is a faint line on a drug test positive or negative?

Negative. Any visible line in the test (T) region counts as negative, even if it is very faint.

How long should I wait to read a drug test cup?

Read the results at 5 minutes. Do not read them after 10 minutes.

What does it mean if there is no control line?

The test is invalid. Retest with a new cup.

What temperature should a urine sample be?

Between 90 and 100°F (32 to 38°C) when checked within 4 minutes of collection.

Instant urine tests give preliminary results. Confirm any preliminary positive with a laboratory test (such as GC/MS) before taking action. Always follow the package insert.
