How Long Do Drugs Stay in Your Urine? Detection Times Chart

How long a drug shows up on a urine test depends on the substance, how much and how often it was used, and the cutoff level of the test. The chart below gives approximate detection windows for the substances our cups and strips screen for.

Urine detection times chart

Substance Code Typical detection window Notes
Alcohol (EtG) EtG Up to about 1 to 3 days Heavy drinking can be detected for up to about 80 hours.
Amphetamine AMP 1 to 3 days
Methamphetamine MET 1 to 4 days
Cocaine COC 2 to 4 days Heavy, frequent use can extend this.
Marijuana THC 1 to 3 days (single use)
5 to 7 days (a few times a week)
10 to 30+ days (daily use)
Stored in body fat, so heavy users test positive much longer.
MDMA / ecstasy MDMA 1 to 3 days
Benzodiazepines BZO 1 to 7 days Long-acting benzos with regular use can be detected for several weeks.
Barbiturates BAR 1 to 3 days Long-acting barbiturates can be detected for up to about 3 weeks.
Buprenorphine BUP Up to about 1 week
Methadone MTD 2 to 7 days Longer with daily dosing.
Oxycodone OXY 1 to 3 days
TRA TRA 1 to 4 days
Gabapentin GAB 1 to 3 days
PCP PCP About 1 to 2 weeks Chronic use can extend this further.
Ketamine KET 2 to 4 days
K2 / Spice K2 1 to 3 days Heavy, frequent use can extend this to several weeks.
Kratom KRA Up to about 1 week Research is limited and results vary widely.
Psilocybin PSY 1 to 3 days
Nicotine (cotinine) COT 2 to 4 days Longer for heavy smokers.

These are general ranges from published references, not guarantees. Individual results vary.

What changes how long a drug is detectable

  • How often it is used. This is the biggest factor. A single use clears far faster than daily use, especially for THC.
  • How much was used. Larger doses take longer to fall below the cutoff.
  • Body fat. Fat-soluble substances like THC are stored and released slowly.
  • Metabolism, age and health. Liver and kidney function affect how quickly the body clears a substance.
  • Hydration. Very dilute urine can push a result below the cutoff. This is why many testers check specific gravity and creatinine, as the 20 panel cup does.
  • The test's cutoff level. A lower cutoff detects smaller amounts, so it can detect use for longer. Each of our products lists its cutoff in ng/mL.

Urine vs. other test types

Urine is the most common testing method because it balances cost, a useful detection window and simple collection. Saliva tests generally detect only very recent use (hours to about 2 days), while hair tests can look back around 90 days but cost more and do not detect very recent use.

Testing at the right time

Because most substances clear within a few days, random and frequent testing catches more use than scheduled testing. That is why sober living homes and treatment programs often test weekly at unpredictable times. See our guides for sober living homes and treatment centers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does THC stay in urine?

Roughly 1 to 3 days after a single use, about a week for use a few times a week, and 10 to 30 days or more for daily users.

How long does alcohol show up on a urine test?

Alcohol itself clears within hours, but EtG, a marker of alcohol use, can be detected for up to about 80 hours after heavy drinking. Read our guide to EtG testing.

Can drinking a lot of water make a test negative?

Very dilute urine can drop below the cutoff. Tests with specific gravity and creatinine checks help identify diluted samples.

Are these detection times exact?

No. They are approximate ranges. Results depend on the person, the amount and frequency of use, and the test's cutoff level.

Instant urine tests give preliminary results. Confirm any preliminary positive with a laboratory test (such as GC/MS) before taking action. Always follow the package insert.
