7-OH, short for 7-hydroxymitragynine, is a compound found in the kratom plant. Natural kratom leaf contains only trace amounts, but concentrated 7-OH products such as tablets, gummies and liquid shots have become widely available, and they are far stronger than traditional kratom.
7-OH vs. kratom leaf
- Kratom leaf comes from a tree native to Southeast Asia. Its main active compound is mitragynine, and 7-OH makes up a very small fraction.
- 7-OH products are made with concentrated or semi-synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine. They are much more potent than kratom leaf and are often sold at gas stations, smoke shops and online.
Why programs are paying attention
Treatment centers, sober living homes and employers report more people using concentrated 7-OH products. They are strong, can be habit-forming, and can cause withdrawal symptoms. In 2025 the FDA recommended that 7-OH be placed under federal drug scheduling, and several states have restricted or banned it. Rules are changing quickly, so check the current laws in your state.
Do standard drug tests detect 7-OH?
No. Standard 5, 10 and 12 panel drug tests do not detect kratom or 7-OH. You need a test designed for it:
