What a THC test actually detects
A urine THC test looks for THC-COOH, the compound the body makes when it breaks down THC. CBD does not produce THC-COOH, so pure CBD alone should not trigger a positive at the standard 50 ng/mL cutoff.
Why CBD users still test positive
- Full-spectrum CBD legally contains small amounts of THC (up to 0.3% by dry weight). With regular or heavy use, that THC can build up enough to cause a positive.
- Mislabeling: CBD products are not tightly regulated, and independent testing has found products with more THC than their labels state.
- Broad-spectrum and isolate products are designed to contain no THC, but they carry the same labeling risk.
Delta-8, delta-10 and THC-O
These will test positive. Delta-8 THC and similar hemp-derived products are forms of THC. The body breaks them down into compounds that standard THC tests detect, so a delta-8 user will typically screen positive for marijuana. The same is generally true of other hemp-derived THC products.
What testers should do
- Write your policy on CBD and hemp-derived products before a positive result comes up.
- Remember that a THC screen cannot tell marijuana from delta-8 or a THC-containing CBD product.
- Send disputed results to a laboratory, which can identify the specific compounds.
