Does Kratom Show Up on a Drug Test?

Short answer: not on a standard drug test. Common 5, 10 and 12 panel tests do not look for kratom. It only shows up on a test that includes a kratom (KRA) panel or a dedicated kratom strip.

Why standard tests miss kratom

Kratom comes from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia. Its main active compounds, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), are chemically different from the substances on standard panels, so they do not trigger those tests. To detect kratom, a test must be designed for it.

Tests that do detect kratom

  • Kratom (7-OH) test strips: single-drug dip strips, 500 ng/mL cutoff, results in 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Multi-panel cups with KRA: our 13, 14, 16, 18 and 20 panel cups include a kratom panel along with the standard tests.
  • Laboratory tests: labs can test for mitragynine and 7-OH when specifically requested.

How long does kratom stay in urine?

Research is still limited. Kratom compounds are generally detectable in urine for up to about a week, with a shorter window after a single use and a longer one after heavy, regular use. See our detection times chart.

Why programs are adding kratom testing

Kratom and concentrated 7-OH products are sold in gas stations, smoke shops and online, and treatment programs and sober living homes report seeing more of them. Kratom can be habit-forming and can cause withdrawal. Because it does not show up on standard panels, programs that do not test for it specifically will not see it. Kratom is also restricted or banned in some states and cities, so check local rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does kratom show up on a 12 panel drug test?

Not usually. Most 12 panel tests do not include kratom. You need a test with a KRA panel or a kratom strip.

Does kratom cause a false positive on other tests?

Kratom is not a common cause of false positives on standard panels. Confirm any unexpected result with a laboratory test.

What is the difference between kratom and 7-OH?

7-OH is one of the compounds in kratom. Concentrated 7-OH products are much stronger than kratom leaf. Read our 7-OH guide.

How long does kratom stay in your system?

Generally up to about a week in urine, though research is limited and results vary.
