About these Alcohol (EtG) drug test strips

Our Alcohol (EtG) test strips are single-panel urine dip tests that screen for EtG, a marker of recent alcohol use. Each strip is individually sealed and gives a visual result in about 5 minutes, with no lab equipment needed.

  • Detects: EtG, a marker of recent alcohol use
  • Cutoff level: 500 ng/mL
  • Specimen: urine
  • Results: read at 5 minutes
  • Status: Forensic use only (not for clinical diagnosis)
  • Packs: box of 25 or case of 100 (minimum order 25)

How to use an EtG dip test strip

  1. Collect the urine sample in a clean, dry cup.
  2. Open the sealed pouch and hold the strip by the top end.
  3. Dip the strip into the urine with the arrows pointing down for 10 to 15 seconds. Do not go past the MAX line.
  4. Lay the strip flat on a clean, dry surface.
  5. Read the result at 5 minutes. Do not read results after 10 minutes.

Reading the result

  • Negative: two lines, one at the control (C) region and one at the test (T) region. Even a faint T line counts as negative.
  • Preliminary positive: only the C line appears.
  • Invalid: no C line. Retest with a new strip.

Always follow the package insert. A preliminary positive should be confirmed by a laboratory test (such as GC/MS).

  3. Remove the strip after 5‑10 seconds and lay it flat on a non‑absorbent surface.
  4. Wait 2‑3 minutes for the lines to appear.
  5. Interpret results: Two lines = Negative (no alcohol detected) ; One line = Positive (alcohol metabolite detected) .

Important Information About ETG Testing

ETG is a direct metabolite of alcohol and can be detected in urine for up to 80 hours after consumption. This makes ETG testing especially valuable for situations requiring absolute abstinence, such as:

  • Workplace safety programs
  • Probation or legal compliance
  • Alcohol treatment and recovery monitoring
  • Personal accountability

Note: While ETG tests are highly accurate, attempts to cheat the test (e.g., dilution, adulteration, or substitution) can compromise results. Proper collection procedures help ensure reliability. For more information on alcohol use and testing, visit NIAAA.
